Each alien craft which you destroy will blow up creating shrapnel that fly all over the place and will destroy any other enemy ships it comes in contact with. To destroy as many enemy ships as possible as quickly as possible you will need to to build long chains of explosions by making sure that they are lined up correctly before shooting.
